Anne Shirley is a red-haired, freckled orphan who is accidentally sent to live with elderly bachelor Matthew Cuthbert and his brittle sister Marilla, who is also unmarried. Matthew and Marilla take Anne in, even though they had expected a boy to help them on their farm. Anne's wild imagination, incessant talking, and fiery temper put her at the center of a series of entertaining adventures. The story is about as well known in the English-speaking world as Pippi Longstocking is in Germany.
